There’s a reason shows like “My 600-lb Life” were popular. People love extreme transformations and there’s just something very satisfying about before and after photos. And the angle of the show always was about helping people overcome their struggles and live healthier lives.
If you watched the show you know this, but for those who might’ve not watched it it’s a pretty simple premise: most people appearing on the show were around 600 lbs, some more some less, and the goal of the show was to get them in touch with the bariatric doctor, Dr. Younan Nowzaradan who would then help them lose the extra pounds with diet, exercise and in most cases – weight loss surgery of some kind.
Christina Phillips appeared in season 2 of My 600-lb life, and at the time weighed 708 pounds at the age of 22. She felt trapped in her body, and in her house. Because of her obesity, Christina was physically unable to move around her house without help and heavily relied on her husband and mother for help on a daily basis.
Her obesity was a result of a food addiction that started early on in her childhood, as a result of her parents having fights. Food would bring her comfort. Later on, this condition was only exacerbated by the fact that neither her mother nor her husband could say no to her and felt comfortable pandering to her demands. While her family didn’t exactly mind having her so dependent on them, they supported Christina’s decision to deal with the problem and attempt to get her life back on track.
The doctor put Christina on a strict diet. At first, she struggled a lot because the hospital food wasn’t to her taste, it seemed quite bland. But that didn’t stop Christina and eventually, she learned how to stick to the diet and lost enough weight to be eligible for gastric bypass surgery, which helped her to lose even more weight. In the end, she managed to lose 267 pounds over the course of a year.
Christina appeared on the show again in the later seasons and revealed that with hard work, dedication to a healthy diet and exercise routine, and some fat and excess skin removal surgeries she managed to reach a weight of 183 lbs. Her self-esteem skyrocketed but her marriage fell apart. Her husband couldn’t deal with Christina’s newfound independence and confidence.
There was a point in Christina’s weight loss journey where she struggled again, but this time for different reasons. At one point she got to the weight of 172 pounds, she became obsessed with the idea of not gaining weight, and got diagnosed with anorexia. But Christina managed to deal with that and now enjoys a balanced healthy life.
She still updates people on social media about her life. She takes part in various events that have to do with weight loss, speaks at seminars about her stories, and even ran a few 5ks. She’s also a mother of two beautiful boys and says that her sons are her biggest blessings.
