Friends First and Last Lines

Friends is a legendary show that many of us have rewatched countless times. It’s one of those comfort shows that you just have on in the background, it’s what you turn on when you feel lonely, it’s just as good even after you know all of the plotlines by heart. Some fans even claim to know every line by heart, which seems like a huge commitment considering there are ten seasons. But we’re not gonna test you on every line. Let’s see if you remember just first and last lines of these Friends characters we all love.

So let’s set the scene. The show opens on the scene of Monica, Joey, Chandler and Phoebe sitting in the Central Perk discussing a guy Monica is going out with.

1.Monica

Monica’s first line is actually the first line in the show. She says “There’s nothing to tell! It’s just some guy I work with.”

Her last line is in the last episode, Monica and Chandler are moving out of the iconic apartment. Monica’s last words are “We’ve got some time”, responding to Rachel’s question about whether they have to leave immediately or if they have some time to grab a cup of coffee.

2.Joey

Joey’s first line is making fun of Monica by insinuating there has got to be something wrong with the guy she’s going out with. He says “Come on! You’re going out with the guy. There’s gotta be something wrong with him.”

His last line is “Yeah. I guess so” in response to Phoebe’s last line (do you remember it? If not you’ll know in a few paragraphs).

3.Chandler

The first thing Chandler does is tease Monica too. “So does he have a hump? A hump and a hairpiece”.

And of course, in true Chandler fashion, his last line is sarcastic too. He agrees to have a coffee with the gang before they leave the city and says “Sure. where?” As if there’s any other option but their beloved Central Perk.

4.Phoebe

Phoebe establishes her weird and adorable personality with her first line “Wait, does he eat chalk? Just cause I don’t want her to go through what I went through with Carl.”

Her last words come right after the gang all leave their keys to the apartment on the kitchen aisle. She says “So, I guess this is it.” It really felt like the end of an era.

5.Ross

Ross made quite a dramatic and depressing entrance with one word “Hi”. We bet you heard that in his voice as you read it.

The last line we hear from Ross is in response to quite an unexpected revelation from Monica who says that he, like every single one of her friends, also used to live in this apartment, specifically that one summer when he tried to make it as a dancer. He responds with “Do you realize we almost made it 10 years without that coming up?”.

6.Rachel

Rachel also made quite a memorable entrance in the first episode by barging into Central Perk wearing a wedding dress. Her first line was “Oh God, Monica, hi! Thank God. I just went to your building and you weren’t there.”

Her last line “OK, should we get some coffee” kind of brings everything full circle. She suggests going to the place where we first met the gang – Central Perk.

7.Judy

Judy, Ross and Monica’s mother is first introduced in the episode “The One With the Sonogram at the End”. The first thing we hear her say “Oh, Martha Ludwin’s daughter is going to call you.” This is of course her way of helping Monica get a cooking job. And then she goes on to criticize Monica’s cooking.

Her last line is in the episode “The One With the Cake” when she’s leaving Emma’s birthday party and says “Nighty-night”.

8.Jack

Jack Geller, the strange father of Ross and Monica is introduced in the same episode as their mother Judy. His first line is “You remember the Ludwins, the big one had a thing for you.”

And his last line is also as he’s leaving Emma’s party with his wife. He explains why he can no longer drive when it’s dark out, saying, “Last winter I went up on a church lawn and drove right through a manger scene. The papers thought it was a hate crime.”

9.Gunther

Gunther is a beloved character for any Friends fan, even though he barely has any lines in the show. We actually see him a lot in season 1 but his first line is only in season 2 when he says “yes” from behind the counter.

Throughout the show we learn that he has a thing for Rachel, but he never says much. It all culminates in his last line when he finally reveals what he’s been feeling for the past 10 years. He says, “Rachel? I know you’re leaving tonight, I just have to tell you. I love you. Now, I don’t know if that changes your plans at all, but I thought you should know.” in “The last one. Part 1”.

10.Richard

The first line we hear from Richard is when he opens the door to Monica and Phoebe who are catering at this party. He says “Come on in. Um, I’m sorry, is Monica Geller coming? I was told she was”. He of course then goes on to date Monica later, and while there’s quite an age difference we all thought he was a good guy and a great boyfriend to Monice.

His last line reflects that. He’s having a conversation with Chandler after trying to win Monica back, and ultimately decides that it’s best if he stops trying to pursue Monica. Chandler calls him a nice guy and Richard’s last line is “I know. I hate that!”

11.Janice

Janice’s first line really becomes her catchphrase over the years and it’s her iconic “Oh My God!”. The only more memorable thing about her is her laugh.

She last appears in season 10 and seems to be looking to buy a house with her husband in the same neighborhood as Chandler and Monica. So to drive her away and make sure she doesn’t become their neighbor Chandler does the only thing he can think of, he ties to convince her he still has feelings for her. Her last line is “Goodbye, Chandler Bing.”
