Billie Eilish Hits Back at Trolls Who Called Her a ‘Sellout’ for Wearing ‘Feminine’ Clothing

Billie Eilish’s appearance has changed drastically over the past few years, and the critics have a lot to say about it. All of us go through different styles, and that’s perfectly acceptable. Unfortunately, this talented singer has had to deal with some judgment when she switched up her style. Eilish has recently spoken up about her style evolution, which went from tomboy-chic to feminine.

Many people called the artist a “sellout” for switching to a feminine style, and the 21-year-old decided to respond to this attack with a statement of her own on Instagram. She addressed all the horrific online comments about her clothes in an IG story. First, she reflected on the criticism that she received at the start of her rise to fame, saying,

“I spent the first 5 years of my career getting absolutely OBLITERATED by you fools for being boy ish and dressing how I did & constantly being told I’d be hotter if I acted like a woman.”

Now that she’s embracing different kinds of styles, she comments that the trolls still won’t stop: “And now when I feel comfortable to wear anything remotely feminine or fitting, I CHANGED and am a sellout…and ‘What happened to her.’ Omg it’s not the same Billie, she’s just like the rest blah, blah.”

She dubbed her critics “bozos” and “true idiots” which we can’t disagree with. Furthermore, she asked her followers to stop judging and critiquing women for their every move, and just let them exist. Eilish followed up with another post, addressing the close-minded thought that she should only have one style.

“FUN FACT! Did you know that women are multifaceted!!!!!??? shocking right??’ she sarcastically wrote. “Believe it or not women could be interested in multiple things. “Also that femininity does not equal weakness???!!!!” she continued in another post. “Omg?! insane right? Who knew?? And also totally unheard of and insane to want to express yourself differently at different times.”

Wanting to experiment with new styles isn’t a crime. After all, is your closet filled with only one type of clothes, or a range of outfits for different moods and occasions? Normal women aren’t punished for their sense of style, and women in the spotlight shouldn’t be either.

Billie finished her post by calling the trolls “women hating a** weirdos”. We’re proud of this singer for standing up for herself when so many stay silent and internalize this pain. Hopefully, her actions can help inspire younger girls to defend themselves and not take ridiculous comments to heart.

In a 2021 interview with Vogue, Eilish spoke out about her diverse fashion styles. She surprised fans when she commented that “big dresses” were her favorite thing to wear as a child, and she would often wear a dress every day. However, as she got older, she admitted that body image had a negative effect and caused her to stop hiding her body, leading to the baggy, skater-inspired style that Eilish has resorted to over the past few years. If the paparazzi and millions of people were constantly zooming in on our bodies and judging every inch of them, we might want to hide our bodies under baggy tees as well!

Earlier in 2023, the “Bad Guy” singer talked about how social media can be harmful in a podcast interview with Conan O’Brien. In the interview, she admitted that she deleted all social media apps from her phone, expanding that the move to stop looking at social media and obsessing over others’ opinions was “such a huge deal for me. ‘Cause dude, you didn’t have the internet to grow up with.”

The star also discussed how she felt uncomfortable seeing social media posts that put a spotlight on her. While she enjoys going online, she doesn’t enjoy seeing that the videos and content she’s watching are actually about her. She called this internet fame “stinky” and claimed that she didn’t like it.

Around the time that she made these comments, she also broke up with her boyfriend Jesse Rutherford after less than a year of dating. Their last public appearance was at Coachella in April 2023. According to Billie’s rep, the split was amicable and friendly.
